Hi, after having Gross haematuri as my only symptom I am now going to a fastrack appointment. I do not have an infection so when I visited GP he asked for some urine off me again and after dipping it told me I needed this fastrack appointment . He had a mask on and a strong Indian accent so I was getting a bit confused . He said I needed to be checked for cancer . Does this mean he found a lot of blood in my urine which needed more investigation or can you actually see markers cancer when urine is dipped . ?

  • Hi philw.

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Sherrye and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you’ve joined the bladder cancer forum; I hope you are finding it helpful and supportive.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been experiencing blood in your urine. I’m glad you’ve reported this to your GP for assessment. At Macmillan Cancer Support with any new, changing, or worsening symptom we’d always suggest reporting this to your GP as you have.

Blood in your urine can be a sign of bladder cancer and should be investigated further, the earlier it’s found the easier it can be to treat.

It’s not possible to confirm bladder cancer with just a urine dip. Further investigations are needed to confirm if the presence of blood is due to cancer or another reason or condition such as kidney stones or infection.

It can be a very anxious time waiting for test results, if you feel it would help to talk this through further please reach out to us on the Macmillan Support Line anytime.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Sherrye H,

    Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
