Awaiting breast biopsy results

I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsies taken due to a lump I found. I’ve been told the lump is very suspicious and there’s a cyst beside it. The consultant did mention that it is localised with no signs of it spread throughout the breast. Awaiting biopsies.
what does this mean?

  • Hello LynneC11

Thanks for getting in touch with us and welcome to the online community. My name is Linda and I am one of the nurses on the Support Line.

I appreciate that waiting for test results is not easy and it can be difficult to concentrate on anything else. Some people find it helpful to keep busy and try do everything things to distract their mind for a short while. It can help to share how you are feeling with family or friends.

They suspect that the lump may be cancerous and the best way to say for certain is to test the tissue. They will be able to say more when they have the results of your biopsy.

Localised means that it’s in one area of the breast and they cannot see any evidence that it has spread to any other areas of the breast. Depending on the results they may want to carry out more tests.

  • Hi thanks for replying.
im just so worried and upset.
I feel like the consultant has prepared me for the terrible news that it is cancer but also mentioned that it’s localised , so I was assuming this was positive as far as breast cancer news goes. I know you can’t give me any answers
I’ll would love to phone and chat to someone but I’m struggling to actually get words out to talk about it as I’m so upset.

    thanks again

  • Hello LynneC11

Thanks for getting back in touch.

Yes, it is positive that the lump is localised, and they cannot see any other spread in the breast.

It’s understandable that you are worried and upset, it’s only natural to feel this way and totally understandable that you feel you would struggle to speak to someone on the phone right now.

    Take care and Best Wishes
