Back Ache - Bowel Cancer

Hi.

So they found the tumour on Monday, its low down on my left side (near the first bend is one way it was described - apparently a positive for potential surgery). Obviously I'm new to all of this, so apologies if this isn't the right place to be asking this question. I did post in the general forum here before I found this forum.

I'm worried about an ache in my lower back, but which extends vertically - a sort of tense feeling. I've had this for a few months and I had thought it was muscular given the way my desk is set up, but the diagnosis changed that. It seems to be worst when I sit down. It's also seemed worse since the colonoscopy / diagnosis.

I'm worried that it means the cancer has spread to my back / abdomen.

The stress means my back feels tight anyway now, and the nurse I spoke to from the colo-rectal unit (who was great) said the pain didn't raise any red flags for her (but that she obviously hadn't seen the CT so couldn't comment on spread), but I'm now fixating on the fact I didn't tell her it got worse when I was sitting and still felt muscular at times. It's also seemed worse since the colonoscopy / diagnosis.

I was told after the colonoscopy that the tumour was quite large (which they reassured me didn't mean it had spread).

GP has previously reassured me that my bloods didn't show any sign of inflammation (apparently a sign of spread) and liver function etc was all normal.

I am also worried about a few times before Christmas I woke in a cold sweat, and whether that means something in terms of my lymph nodes.

As I said, apologies if I'm using this forum incorrectly, I guess I'm reaching out for whatever support I can get right now.

Thanks,

Rich

  • Dear Rich

Thank you for reaching out to us here at Macmillan Cancer Support.  My name is Rae and I am a Cancer Information Nurse Specialist here at Macmillan.

I can see that you are an active member of our Bowel Cancer Forum and have been receiving lots of support through there.  I hope you are finding this helpful.

We are sorry to hear that you have received the diagnosis of bowel cancer.  Also that you have a pain in your lower back.  Whenever we are approached about a new or worsening symptom we always recommend that you get in touch with either your bowel cancer team, GP, or call 111

We always err on the side of caution with back pain.  We are unable to tell you why you are experiencing it, but we would like you to look at the symptoms of Malignant Spinal Cord Compression (MSCC) and see if you have any of the symptoms such as numbness, pins and needles, leg weakness, difficulty walking, urinary symptoms such as difficulty passing urine or bowel problems such as a constipation or difficulty controlling your bowels.  MSCC is a rare condition, but one that is potentially serious, so we advise not delaying and seeking help as soon as possible to investigate this matter.

I can see from your posts on the bowel cancer forum that you have children, and you are going to talk to them about your diagnosis.  We have information on our website about talking to children and also signpost to further support via Fruit Fly Collective and or RipRap.  I don’t want to get into too many more details about this or any further support we can give as I think it is important to seek help for your back pain first.  But please do contact us again to talk about further support needs for you and your family.

    Best wishes

    Rae, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
