My husband has had call for two years now no treatment but now his bloods have come back with low platelet high red blood cells they have ordered urgent bone marrow and ct scan are they looking to see if he has secondary cancer?

  • Hi

My name is Amy and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line. Thanks for reaching out to us and posting your question.

We’re sorry to hear your husband is waiting for an urgent bone marrow test and CT. It’s only natural to worry about what this means for him.

When on watch and wait for CLL doctors monitor blood tests and general symptoms. If there is a change in either or both, doctors will then investigate further and consider whether it is time to start treatment.

Blood Cancer UK has more information under their How will I know when I need treatment section.

The bone marrow biopsy looks at how much CLL is in the bone marrow and the CT scan looks for any abnormalities, like enlarged lymph nodes or enlarged spleen. These tests help the doctors decide if treatment is needed. It is also useful as a comparison to future scans; to see how well treatment is working.

Uncertainty can be one of the hardest feelings to deal with. Reaching out to his cancer team can help. Many people also find speaking to others in a similar situation can help to feel less isolated and alone. I can see you are already part of our CLL forum and hope you are finding this a safe and supportive space.

CLL Support is another great source of support.

    I hope this helps.
