i was told that i can stop my zoladex as i have now been on it for 5 years.

i was also on exemestane which was to be for 10 years but they said i can also stop that as i have been on for 5 years.

I want to know what happens to my body after ive been taking these meds for 5 years and now have just stopped abruptly.  surely my body will see and feel changes after having these for so long.

I am a bit worried the breast cancer might come back but I need to trust my oncologist.

I am feeling very tired and have little energy and also my moods are very up and down.

can you please let me know if i should expect withdrawal from these drugs.

  • Hi April L

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community, I see you have joined the breast cancer forum.  I hope you find it supportive.  My name is Kathryn and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.

It can seem daunting to stop the Zoladex and Exemestane abruptly after taking them for 5 years. It is safe to do this and although your body will have a period of adjustment this won’t be detrimental to your health.

Feeling tired and mood changes are common side effects of hormone therapy so it may be that you find these improve as your body adjusts. If they continue to impact on your everyday life, I would advise you to contact your GP or clinical nurse specialist to discuss further.

It is understandable that you have concerns about stopping your hormone therapy, but I would like to reassure you that after stopping it will continue to reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back for many years after you finish the treatment. It is known as the carryover effect and may last five years or longer. It is important to be aware of symptoms of recurrence and to report any changes to your GP or hospital team

There are lots of things you can do to help recover following treatment you will find advice on lifestyle and well-being on our website. You may find Breast Cancer Now Becca app helpful in moving forward.

I hope this information is of some help.

    Best wishes

    Kathryn,
