Hi,

My mom has kidney cancer and will need a donor kidney soon.

I would like to donate but I am too Overweight. I'm working hard on losing weight and wondered if the weight loss injections have any detrimental affect on the kidneys or would affect a transplant in any way please?

  • Hi ADSSHM,

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

    Welcome to our online community.

I’ve had a look at your posts in our online forum, where you explain that your mum was on the transplant list, because her kidneys are failing, when she was diagnosed with cancer.

I understand that you have made enquiries about organ donation but are still waiting on a reply.

Your mum’s renal or transplant team should be able to say when they are likely to be in touch.

We’d recommend that you give them a call.

They are best placed to answer any questions you might have about organ donation, including ones about weight loss injections.

As nurses on this platform, we are unable to say what effect these injections may have on your kidneys or say whether they could affect a transplant.

    I hope this is helpful.

You might find Kidney Care UK a helpful support.

If you’d like to talk to one of the nurses on our support line about your mum’s cancer diagnosis, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. And please pass on our contact details to your mum if she’d like to get in touch. The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.

    Sending best wishes,

    Carole
