  • Dear Shaz69,

My name is Liz and I’m a Cancer Information Nurse Specialist on the Macmillan Support Line.

Thank you for contacting us for information and support after your husband’s recent diagnosis of lung cancer.

Supporting and caring for someone with cancer is unbelievable hard and sometimes you are not sure what to do for the best.

You mention that your husband is in pain and struggling to have a bowel movement.

I would recommend that he needs an urgent assessment by a doctor within the next 2 hour, that is by 4pm on 11/1/24.

I would advise that you contact his GP’s surgery and ask for an urgent appointment, if the surgery can’t help then phone 111 or encourage him to attend accident and emergency at the nearest hospital.

If you feel that his condition is life threatening, then please dial 999.

Perhaps you would like to phone us on 0808 808 0000 or email us so we can support you further.

You may wish to explore our online community, talking to people in a similar situation may help a little.

I hope this information has been useful, please contact us whenever we can help.

    Take care.

  • Hi Shaz69

Thanks for getting back in touch. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan cancer information nurses.

I’m glad to read that you managed to get your husband seen and that he is being treated in hospital.

It’s difficult when someone’s health changes so quickly. It can be emotionally and physically exhausting. It’s important that you also take care of yourself. Your wellbeing is just as important at this tough time.

You may find it helpful to call our Support Line and talk to someone. We are here every day from 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000.

Often talking to others going through a similar experience can be helpful to do. There is nothing quite like the support that you can get from others who know what it’s like. We have great online groups, who support one another while they are looking after someone with cancer, that you can join. There is the family and friends forum, and the carers forum.

Support is also available at Carers UK.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,

    Fiona P,
