Hi. I had breast cancer in 2008 which was tripe negative. I had chemo and radiotherapy after a lumpectomy but since then I have suffered from menopause symptoms including hot flushes which can be quite severe and debilitating at times. I do not take anything for them but I have just recently been told about Vitabiotics Menopace Original tablets which contain vitamins and soya isoflavones. Would it be safe for me to take these please? I dont want to risk any recurrence of the cancer or put my health in jeopardy. Thank you.

Thank you for contacting us here at Macmillan Cancer Support.  My name is Rae and I am a Cancer Information Nurse Specialist.

It is great to hear that you successfully finished your cancer treatment in 2008.  It is understandable that you are looking to find relief from your severe and debilitating menopausal symptoms.

Early menopause due to cancer treatment can be a shock and can cause more severe symptoms than a natural menopause.  There is a guide to all things menopause if you’ve had breast cancer which you may find interesting.

In answer to whether you can take soya isoflavones, there has been a lot of research into the use of soy and other phytoestrogens to relieve hot flushes.  Although a diet containing naturally occurring phytoestrogens is safe for people who have had breast cancer, taking supplements is not currently recommended.  This information is backed up by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) who say ‘do not offer soy (isoflavone), red clover, black cohosh, vitamin E or magnetic devices to treat vasomotor symptoms in women with breast cancer’ (1.12.18 reference line).

We would always ask for you to check with your GP, breast cancer team (if you still have access) or consult with a menopause specialist as they will be able to assess your risk fully and have access to your medical records.

Once you have read the above links, you may wish discuss the above information further.  We are always happy to speak to you on either our Support Line or Chat Online.

    Best wishes
