  • Hi James826

    Thanks for getting in touch.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear you’re experiencing changes in your bowel habits, and you’ve noticed blood in your stools. I can understand your concerns and can imagine how worrying this must be for you. I am pleased you contacted us so we can offer you further advice and support

It’s difficult to say what may be causing your current symptoms and can only stress how important it is to get these symptoms checked out.

We would suggest because you have new and worrying symptoms to make an appointment with your GP. They are in an ideal position to refer you urgently for necessary tests and investigations. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provides clear guidance to GP’s on which symptoms may lead to a cancer diagnosis.

If you have worsening symptoms, we would suggest contacting NHS111 immediately or attending A&E for further medical advice.

Many people share your fears, most find their symptoms are caused by other illnesses or conditions rather than cancer. However, it’s very important you get your symptoms investigated as soon as possible.

I hope this information has been helpful, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. you might find it helpful to talk one of nurses on the support line. Sometimes giving us a call can help. It’s a free phone number on 0808 808 0000 and we are here 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or email us.

    Regards
