Pancreatic cancer end of life

My mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February of this year. She has struggled with eating and appetite for a while now but things have really progressed in the past two days to the point where she can’t swallow anything without being sick, not even her pills. Last night she threw up a black liquid. She is very reluctant to go to the hospital because she doesn’t want to be put on thing intravenously. I think in some ways she doesn’t want to prolong things. My question is how do I help her? I don’t know who to talk to which I suppose is why I’ve come on here

  • Hi AurelianoB,

Thanks for getting in touch. I hope you are finding the online community a safe and supportive space to connect with others affected by cancer.

My name is Eileen, and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists working on the Macmillan support line

I’m sorry to hear about your mum. This must be a worrying time for you.

You don’t mention whether your mum is having care and support from Community Palliative Care Nurses, District Nurses or whether her GP is aware of her worsening symptoms. If she has not been reviewed by a medical professional since her condition has deteriorated, we would strongly advise that you call 999 today.

The black liquid that your mum vomited last night might be a sign of bleeding and warrants urgent review. This really is the best way for you to help her at present.

I do hope this information is helpful but please know that you can call one of our nurses to discuss things further.

    Take care and best wishes,

     Eileen
