Mood swings

Hi, I’ve been on Zoladex (3 monthly injections) for 15 months now. I started prior to radiotherapy for local advanced prostate cancer.  I’m experiencing pretty bad mood swings - I can become very irritable about a whole host of things, generally concerning people; however, I also become teary very quickly, especially when watching television programmes and films. I would say that I’m an emotionally intelligent individual, who is very empathetic, but I’m on an emotional rollercoaster at the moment - I’m finding it exceedingly difficult to control my emotions.

  • Hi Valkyrie

Thank you for getting in touch, and welcome to the online community. My name is Anne-Marie, and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you haven’t joined any of our online forums yet; you may find our prostate cancer forum useful; it can be helpful to speak to others who are going through a similar experience to yourself.

I’m sorry to hear you are having side effects from your hormone therapy; mood swings and heightened emotions can be difficult to deal with. Unfortunately, one of the possible side effects of Zoladex is that it can affect your mood and emotions.

We would always recommend letting your cancer team or GP know how you are feeling so they could look at possibly changing your treatment or helping in another way.

Some people find talking therapies like counselling helpful; we offer a free counselling service in partnership with Bupa for people affected by cancer, which could be beneficial to you. To access the counselling you can sign up through our website or by giving us a call.

Prostate Cancer UK has information on how hormone therapy can affect you and includes other patient's experiences. They also have a one-to-one support service where they can try to match you with someone who has had a similar experience to yourself.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Take care and best wishes

    Anne-Marie
