Colorectal Surgery - Oramorph and constipation

Hi,

I wonder if you could help me please. I was discharged last night following a laparoscopic low anterior resection of upper rectal carcinoma on Friday. I’m currently on tramadol and morphine oral solution.  The morphine works really well at bridging the pain gap as the tramadol wears off.

My bowel movements are still very unpredictable and I didn’t realise the morphine could cause constipation until I spoke with my lead nurse earlier.  She suggested half a sachet of laxative a day would help whilst on the morphine and she kindly named the laxative they highly recommend but like an idiot I have forgotten the name of it.  Would you know which laxative it is likely to be or be able to provide a list so I can see if I recognise it?

I am reluctant to use the morphine now as I haven’t had a movement all day and prior to that had only been passing slight amounts with a mixture of slight blood. If you could help I would be very grateful.

  • Hi Craig123

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the Online Community. I’m Barbara, one of the Cancer Information Nurses here on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see that you have joined our online Bowel Cancer forum, I hope you are finding this useful.

Thank you for providing the details about your recent bowel surgery and the current pain relief medication.

We would recommend that you get back in touch with your lead nurse, who you spoke with earlier, to clarify the name of the laxative that she suggested. There are many available laxatives, and we would not want you to risk taking the wrong one from a list.

When you speak with your nurse it would be a good idea to mention about your reluctance to take the morphine as she may be able to recommend an alternative pain killer. Also mention to her about your passing a small amount of blood whilst passing a movement. This will ensure she has the full details of your current situation.

I hope this information helps and please get back in touch if you need any more information or support.

    Best wishes,

Barbara L – Cancer Information Nurse Specialist.
