I had a DEXA scan back in mid October, but haven't had the results yet, although I'm chasing them up! My question is does this scan also show whether the cancer has spread to my bones from the prostate please?

Thank you,

Bas

  • Dear Bas,

Thank you for getting in touch with us, and welcome to our online community. My name is Annerose I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses here at the Macmillan Cancer Support line.

It’s always a worrying time when you’re having cancer treatment and waiting for results is not easy. I can see that you have joined some of our forum groups already and I hope you will find them helpful.

DEXA scans are used to check the density of your bones, especially if you are having hormontherapy treatment including for prostate cancer. This can cause your bones to get thinner and less dense and it can make them more at risk of breaking (fracturing).

A bone density scan is not usually used to detect cancer in the bones, doctors use bone density scans to monitor any potential side effect of treatments on your bone mass, such as osteoporosis or osteopenia.

Dealing with cancer can be an emotional time and you might find it helpful to read our web pages about getting emotional support. You can also check our webpage to find details of support and information organisations in your area.

I hope this has been helpful, but please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you need any further information or support.

    Best wishes and take care
