Hi

I had hysterectomy over two years ago. Today I noted slight blood on the toilet paper after a wee. I am so worried. What could it be?

  • Dear Shirely100,

Thank you for getting in touch with us, and welcome to our online community. My name is Annerose I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses here at the Macmillan Cancer Support line.

It is understandable that you worry about finding blood after you have been to the toilet. Unfortunately, it is impossible to guess what the cause of this is Shirley100.

There could be several reasons, from having a urinary tract infection to vaginal atrophy, this is thinning and drying of the vaginal wall which can occur when your body has less oestrogen after the menopause or a hysterectomy.

It is important however, that you have this checked out, as with all new or worsening symptoms we would always advise you to contact your GP or health care team and discuss this with them. They might want to examine you, do tests such as a urin test for example, to establish the reason behind it and can get you the appropriate treatment.

I hope this has been helpful, but please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you need any further information or support.

    Best wishes and take care
