  • Hi  Peggy123

Thanks for getting in touch with us. My name is Tricia and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear yourself or someone you know has been diagnosed with Dupuytrens Contracture. However, it is important to remember that this is a benign (non-cancer) thickening of tissue between the tendons of the finger that cause one or more fingers to bend inwards towards the palm.

The cause of Dupuytren's Contracture is unknown but there are some risks  including it occurring with people over 50,  more common in men then woman, family history of the condition, Northern Europe descent,  occupation of using vibrating tools, diabetes and smoking and alcohol consumption.

The condition is often mild, but it can progress over months or years. There are treatment options if you feel the condition is impacting your daily life. It will be important to discuss this with your medical team.

There is a  British Dupuytren's Society that supports people with this condition, and you may find them helpful.

Hopefully that has reassured you that this condition is not associated with cancer.

If you have any symptoms or concerns regarding any cancer in the future, it will be important to contact your GP for assessment.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Sending best wishes,
