My father has just been diagnosed with High Grade Non Hodgkins Lymphoma and starts chemo in a couple of weeks. He is having Pola R CHP, I’m just wondering how quickly and what side affects we can expect on his first day of treatment?

Hi Whizbit,
Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is David, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.
I am sorry to hear your father’s diagnosis of High-Grade Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL). However, glad to hear he will soon commence treatment.
We have Information on Pola R-CHP which you may find useful going forward. This includes information on all potential, possible side effects of this regime.
It is important to remember though that whilst this information seems like an endless list, we do not expect your father to get A-Z on that list.
We won’t know what side effects, if any, your father may have until he starts.
But, if your father does experience any unwanted side effects or started to feel strange then he must contact his chemotherapy team straight away.
The key message here is good communication with the hospital treatment team.
The chemotherapy team will introduce themselves in due course. They will go through the information on this chemotherapy regime and highlight what precautions to take. They will also give advice on avoiding infection whilst on chemotherapy.
Sometimes people find it helpful to talk to others who may be in a similar situation to themselves. Our Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Forum may be a good place to start.
Alternatively, Lymphoma Action or the Blood Cancer UK sites are also good sources of information and support.
If there is anything else we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch.
Best wishes
David, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
