My Dad had oesophagus cancer and his treatment finishes 3years ago December. He had 1 months intense radiotherapy. Since then all scans have come back clear and no narrowing of his oesophagus. Question would he still be getting effects from this and what would they be?

  • Hello Twixy

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Helen, I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

Welcome to the online community. I see you have joined our oesophageal cancer forum and hope you have found it a warm and supportive community.

It’s great to hear that your dad is doing so well after his oesophageal cancer treatment three years ago. It was also good to read that he has no side effects to his treatment.

Sometimes cancer treatments have late effects, that’s side effect that can happen months or even years after treatment. Radiotherapy to the oesophagus can sometimes result in late effects such as narrowing of the oesophagus or breathing issues. If you scroll down the linked page to the paragraph on late effects, you will find a little more information.

The important thing is that your dad is aware of any changes and lets either his GP or his cancer team know.

I hope this information is useful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in contact by email, webchat or phone, if you need further information or support.
