I have just had my lumpectomy and sentinel node removed, this week.

Before my op the only test results I knew was I am ER negative, I didnt know what my HER2 result was until just before my op. I asked surgeon before my op if they had my HER2 result now and she checked and said yes it is negative, I didn't ask anymore at the time but wondering now if I am triple negative, panicking a bit now. Next appointment is next Friday.

  • Hi Alison218

Thank you for getting in touch, and welcome to the online community. My name is Anne-Marie, and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can see you have joined the breast cancer forum. I hope it will be a good source of support for you.

This must be a difficult time for you as you wait for your hospital team's full results, following surgery. Here at Macmillan, we do not have access to medical notes or results; your consultant is best placed to discuss this with you.

For a diagnosis of triple negative cancer, you need to be Oestrogen receptor negative (ER-negative), Progesterone receptor negative (PR-negative) and Her2-negative, it is unclear if all three are negative with you from your query. I  have included some further information on triple-negative breast cancer for you.                                                                                                            It may be helpful for you to write down some Questions to ask your healthcare team before your appointment. We recommend taking someone with you to the appointment, if possible, as processing all the information given can be difficult.

It is common to have many different emotions when you have cancer if you would like to get further support, Macmillan are offering through Bupa, up to 6 free counselling sessions for people struggling emotionally because they are living with cancer. Breast cancer now also has a Someone Like Me programme to match you with a trained volunteer with a similar experience to you.

I hope this has been helpful.

    Sending best wishes,

    Anne-Marie
