Sudden deterioration

My husband has stage 4 lung cancer with secondary in liver and eyes.
He’s previously had radiotherapy, immunotherapy and more recently moved onto chemo but that stopped 8 weeks ago and his oncologist said he’d get him on a trial instead but we’ve heard nothing.

He was eating well and active until a couple of weeks ago. Now he spends 23 hours a day in bed, mostly asleep. He’s lost appetite and is in a lot of pain. What should I do? He can’t go to A&E as he wouldn’t be able to sit there for hours - he needs to keep curled up in bed.
Can I ask a Doctor to visit him at home?
Thanks

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch with Macmillan Cancer support, I’m Linda, one of the nurses from our support line.

I’m so sorry to read about your husband and the pain he is experiencing.

If you haven’t already called 111 we would encourage you to do this just now, so his pain and any other symptoms can be assessed. They will be able to advise about the best way to arrange help for him.

Unfortunately, because it’s the weekend, it’s unlikely that any of his hospital team will be contactable

After your husband’s been assessed, if your able too, it might be an idea to call us on our number below. We can ask little more about his situation and look at what guidance and support that might be helpful.

    Best wishes

     Linda, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
