Hi,

I had just had my last (no12) chemo for hodgkins lymphoma.  I'm awaiting ct and pet scans to decide re radiotherapy,  was just wondering when I can have flowers in my house and eat soft cheese

Many thanks

  • Hi Kmickt,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is David, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am glad to hear you have completed your chemotherapy treatment for Hodgkin Lymphoma.

During chemotherapy and radiotherapy we know our immune system is lowered and we can pick up infection easily. That’s why guidance is given to avoid flowers and particular diets.

Flowers can harbour fungal spores, bacteria and pollens which can place patients at a higher risk of infection.

Radiation and chemotherapy can also alter your sense of smell. Pleasant, scented flowers can become unbearable, too strong or cause nausea.

Food safety when your immunity is low can help reduce your risk of infection. This is sometimes called a clean or neutropenic diet.

Your healthcare team will keep a close eye on your bloods and immune system. Your Doctor, Nurse or Dietician are also best placed to advise how long you may have to avoid certain foods.

Lymphoma Action and Blood Cancer UK are also good sources of information and support.

If there is anything else we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch.

    Best wishes

    David, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
