Hello. I had breast cancer in 2017 and have had clear mammograms yearly since. This year I have had a recall and been told there is a 8mm mass in my other breast and it has been marked as a cat 4. I’m terrified. Is there any chance this might not be another cancer?

  • Hi Bush

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. My name is Fiona and I’m one of the Macmillan Cancer Information Nurses.

It’s understandable that you feel terrified given that you previously had breast cancer. Most people would be anxious on being told that there is something suspicious on their mammogram.

It’s important that you know there is support for you in dealing with your emotions.

A mammogram result of cat 4 means that the findings are suspicious and further investigations are indicated. Suspicious means it could possibly be cancer, but we cannot be certain if it is or not from the mammogram. It’s important that they do these further investigations so that you know what this mass is and how it needs to be dealt with.

Some people find it helpful to call and speak to one of our nurses so that we can discuss what is happening and how you are feeling. You can call on 0808 808 0000. We are here every day from 8am to 8pm.

You may also find it helpful to join our breast cancer forum and get support from others who understand your experience and can offer you support.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.
