Hello,

My hair started falling out recently, and I will shave it off soon. I have scalp psoriasis and wonder how to care for it when my hair is shaved. I usually wash my hair with Neutrogena T/Gel. Not sure if I can tolerate any moisturiser etc.

Thanks,
Michelle

  • Hello Michelle.

Thanks for getting in touch with us and welcome to the online community. My name’s Ursula  and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists. I can see that you have joined a few of our forums, I really hope you are finding them supportive and helpful.

As nurses on the support line, we do not have access to NHS medical records or information.  Given that you have said you have scalp psoriasis, your GP, breast care team or a dermatologist would be best placed to advise on what products would be safe and recommended for use.

The charity Cancer hair care has some guidance on scalp care which may be helpful. They also offer telephone or email support as part of their service. There are also some other tips on page 44 of our booklet Coping with hair loss.  This information, however, is general guidance around hair loss and scalp care rather than management of skin conditions following hair loss.

Look good feel better, are another cancer charity and they offer workshops and classes for people living with cancer. They currently have one on Hair loss, scalp care and new growth, which you may be interested in.  It runs once a month and is free of charge to attend.

I do hope you find this information helpful, but please do not hesitate to get back in touch with us if you need any further support.

    Best wishes,

    Ursula, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
