So i keep getting copies of the letters they send to my GP. And my appointments keep getting shuffled around so what does this mean: 45mm supra hilar mass area, surrounds left upper lobe bronchus causing left upper lobe collapse with the suggestion of possible extension into the mediastinum at the AP window area...

Just wondering if anyone could explain what it means.. my next doc. App is I'm August for a breathing test before I see a surgeon.

  • Hello Frazzled,

Thanks for getting in touch with us. My name is Linda I’m one of the cancer information nurse specialists on the support line. I see that you have joined some of our forums. I hope you are finding them helpful.

It can be very frustrating receiving copies of your medical letters, especially as they are not fully explained to you.

I can help explain some of the terms for you, but I would encourage you to discuss this with your consultant, so that they can explain fully what this means for you.

It may help your understanding to have a look online at a diagram of the lungs. We have diagrams on our website, but they are basic.

The hilum is in a flat area at the centre of the lung, so a hilar mass would be found in that area.

The upper lobe of the lung is on the top and the bronchus are tubes that connect to the windpipe.

The mediastinum is a space in your chest that holds your heart and other important structures. The AP window is a term used by radiologists to describe an area on the front chest.

Your post mentions lobe collapse sometimes this does not cause any symptoms but if you are experience any new symptoms such as chest or shoulder pain, shortness of breath or chest tightness call 999.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
