Hi,

I had 2 ops 7 weeks ago a bowel resection (no stoma) all successful no other treatment, also full hysterectomy also no complications. In the last 7 weeks I have noticed some blood in the toilet when I've had a poo, both these times it's not been as soft as other times, is this normal?

Thanks

  • Hi Tazza1975,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am so pleased to hear both your operations were a success and no further treatments are required.

It’s common for changes in bowel habits to occur following both surgeries you have had.  Constipation and hard stools are a common side effect following surgery, this irritates the colon and lead to small amounts of blood.  It is important that you drink plenty of fluids and eat a healthy diet.  You need to let your healthcare team know about any side effects so they can assess you and help make you more comfortable.

However, if the bleeding was to become heavy or more persistent, we would advise you to talk to your team or GP, or out of hours call 111 or 999.

    I hope that this helps.

    Best wishes and take care,

    Paula (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
