Hello.  Diagnosed breast cancer mets 2 months ago, started on letrozole and first round ribociclib. Due to start back on the ribociclib 10 days ago but neutrophils too low. 2nd blood test yesterday- the neutrophils still to low, can't restart. Worried about consequences of delay.

  • Hi Sea Ranger

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community. My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear you have been going through such a difficult time recently. Talk to your breast care team today and tell them how you feel so that you are not worrying, and they can put some support in place to help you during this time.  It can often feel daunting when things change, and it doesn’t quite work out the way we expected it to.

It is quite common for treatments to be delayed, we know that certain cells can be affected during treatment which is why regular blood tests are carried out so that your team can monitor you and ensure your safety. Low blood counts are a common side effect of the drugs you are taking and occurs in more than 30% of patients on ribociclib.  This can happen throughout the cycles. When your neutrophils are low this means that there is an increased risk of infection and therefore the risks to your safety outweigh any of the benefits.

Coping with any side effects of treatment can be challenging. Have a look at our information on coping with treatment or you can give us a call on the Macmillan Support Line to discuss what other support maybe helpful for you right now.

Breast cancer Now is another cancer charity solely dedicated to anyone affected by Breast cancer, and their forum for secondary breast cancer may also be helpful at this time.

     Best Wishes
