Brain tumour

I was informed that they found a tumour on the right side of my brain. They said it was benign, is this still something I should worry about as I was Informed that a benign tumour can turn malignant over a period of time. If they leave it could it just spread? Already have peritoneal cancer that's worrying enough. Do I need to be concerned? How can they tell its benign if there was no biopsy?

  • Hi Ladyv76,

I’m Kirsty one of the cancer information nurse specialists that work on the Macmillan support line.

Thanks for getting in touch. I can hear how worried you are, as you try to understand what this diagnosis means for you. Perhaps more confusing, as you have been through a cancer diagnosis and are aware of how important a biopsy is.

Not all abnormal cells (benign or cancerous) are able to be biopsied prior to surgery. This is because of where they are in the body, often in a difficult to reach place. You don’t mention if surgery is planned, but if so, a biopsy will be taken at this time.

A diagnosis can be made with information from a few different scans. Sometimes if the tumour is slow growing and not causing any issues, the consultant may delay treatment and monitor any growth along with your symptoms. This is called active monitoring.

I appreciate that going forward without treatment can be an anxious time. Especially when waiting for follow up tests and results. Why not ask the consultant how best to get back in touch if you have any concerns? This may reassure you of the support offered by your hospital team.

You might also be considering questions to ask your consultant? Although this list is based around a cancer diagnosis, there are many that if asked, will help answer some of your concerns.

Additional support can be found at The Brain Tumour Charity.

    Best wishes
