My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer 5th May 23. Currently not receiving treatment as they suspect liver cancer also so been waiting and have now had PET MRI and CT. We are due to see consultant 19 July to discuss results.

However each evening he is in more and more pain not too bad during the day although it’s still there but evening really bad. Any suggestions on pain relief?

  • Hi Jan,

    Thanks for getting in touch

My name is Lindsey and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear that your husband is in pain and it is getting worse.

It is important to tell the healthcare team about his pain. Rather than waiting until his appointment on the 19th, make an appointment to see his GP. The doctor will make an assessment to identify what is causing his pain and plan how best to manage it. Treating pain involves finding the pain relief that works best for your husband and the type of pain he has.

While you are waiting to see the doctor, Paracetamol can be used for many types of pain. It does not cause many side effects, but it is very important not to take more than the recommended dose.

Keeping a pain diary will help your doctor understand the type of pain your husband has. He could make a note of:

    The date and time

Where it is and does it move anywhere.

    How long it lasts

How intense it is (he could give it a score 1 to 10 with 1 being no pain to 10 being severe pain)

Does anything help the pain or is there anything that makes it worse.
