Hi,

I am so sorry for bothering you but I am not coping that well mentally at the moment. Up until recently I have been fit and healthy. But now I fear I have bile duct cancer or pancreatic cancer.

Back story

I had my over 40 health check on the NHS. It came back with quote Dr worrying high liver function test results.

Alakaline phosphate level 285 u/l when fasting original was 344Alanine aminotransferase level 297 u/l when fasting was 437

Total Bilrudim 33 umol/l when fasting was 15 before. GGT levels were also very high.

I am a 40 year old male. BMI of 22 5ft 7. Exercise regularly and eat fairly healthy easily get to six portions of fruit and veg a day beans and pulse once a week etc. Mainly white meat. But weakness for cheese, cookies and chocolate.

I had my abdomen liver scan.

Key findings were

Over extended gallbladder – half filled with sludge

intrahepatic dilation

tiny calculi

Very significantly dilated CBD with no cause for obstruction

They could not get a good image of my pancreas on the scan for some reason.

My GP has now referred me for an urgent MRCP scan. And he seems very concerned but won’t say why. When you google all of the above it leads to the death sentence on pancreatic cancer or bile duct.

In the last couple of weeks I have been feeling very bloated and nausea (but not sick) and I have had discomfort on my right side near my belly button.

I am so worried as my Dad currently has cancer and my cousin has died of breast cancer at 42. I am so worried that I am number three,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I can see you are a member of some of our forums, I hope you find it a supportive environment. My name is Luzia, I am one of the Cancer Information Nurses.

It sounds like a very difficult time for you especially with having family affected by cancer. It is understandable that you would worry about these changes in your blood results and liver ultrasound. Waiting for results is often an extremely worrying time for people.

Your GP will have followed Nice Guidelines and has referred you for the urgent MRCP scan. In 9 out of 10 cases for urgent referrals where a cancer diagnosis is a possibility, the results show that the symptoms and abnormal results are not caused by cancer but by another illness or condition. For your next appointment, you may find it helpful to look the following information. It lists good questions to ask your medical team.

It is difficult for us to be able to comment specifically on your situation because we do not have access to your medical records and can therefore only talk in general terms.

It might be a good idea to speak to your GP about how you are feeling. While you are waiting for tests and further results, you may want to look at the information on Anxiety UK and MIND for some helpful tips on managing anxiety and stress. Big Health UK has two Apps that you may find helpful too.

I hope this information is helpful, if you have more questions please don’t hesitate to get back in touch or email us. Alternatively, many people in your situation find it useful to call our Macmillan Support Line to talk things through in more detail. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm)
