Hi please can you help me. My dad was diagnosed last July and has received 10 rounds of immunotherapy everything was going so well until 4 weeks ago, suddenly he stopped eating, has got terrific pain in neck arms and legs so so tired can’t leave the house doctor came out yesterday and listened to his chest and said he thinks it’s to do with the cancer as something is moving , 4 weeks ago he had very low sodium but that is normal now my question is - is this how it ends or could he bounce back, he was admitted to hospital this morning. The sad thing is my mum died on Boxing Day from lung cancer and this is exactly what happened to her at the end. I just want to know what to expect.

thanks Bluexx

  • Hi Bluexxx,

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Thanks for getting in touch, and welcome to our online community. I can see from your profile, that you have joined a few of our groups. I hope they will be a good source of support for you.

I’m so sorry to read that your mum died on Boxing Day, and that your dad had to be admitted to hospital recently.

Unfortunately, as nurses on the Support Line, we can’t say if this is how it could end, or if your dad could bounce back. People can recover from side effects of treatment, but we can’t say if this is what caused your dad to become unwell, or if it was something else.

His hospital specialist team are best placed to answer, and we’d recommend that you get in touch with them. Your dad will have to give permission for them to speak to you. They should be able to talk to you about treatment, how symptoms could be managed and may be able to say what could happen in the future. We understand how important it can be to know what to expect.

It sounds as if this may help you to cope, at this stressful time.

I hope this has been helpful.

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if you have further questions.

    Sending best wishes,

    Carole
