Primary Liver cancer

Hi all, I am new here, I have been diagnosed with primary liver cancer in segment 8. Had 2 CT scan done, over 4 months, and it seems that the cancer has devascularised itself, basically it has shrunk and is not growing or moving. Has anyone encounter this? is this possible? it seems too good to be true. For now we are just monitoring with scans every 3 months, is this the right path or should I ask for a medical plan of action? I am in a kind of  limbo.  Doctor  haven't really explained how this happened or what to expect next. I am just scared that it might suddenly wake up and create a bigger problem. Any advise is appreciated, thanks!

  • Hi Albatros,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to our online community.

My name is Carole and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on The Macmillan Support Line.

It’s important to understand why your hospital specialists have recommended monitoring of your cancer with scans every 3 months, rather than treatment.

We’d recommend that you ask to speak to your consultant, or specialist nurse, if you have one. It might be worth asking if you have been discussed at a multi-disciplinary team meeting (MDT). It’s sometimes reassuring to know that decisions about treatment have been made by a team of healthcare professionals, rather than one person.

Asking them to explain what is happening with your cancer, and whether this is likely to change, will hopefully make you feel as if you are less in limbo, and more in control.

It might be helpful to have a look at these ‘questions to ask your doctor’ which have been suggested by the British Liver Trust.

If you remain unsure about the recommendations which have been made for you, you could ask about getting a second opinion.

    I hope this is helpful.

If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Sending best wishes,

    Carole
