Hi

Yesterday I had my first follow-up mammogram after a mastectomy in January 2022. I am having the results next Thursday.

The problem is it has totally thrown me. Although I went to the appointment care free now I feel really anxious and really emotional...I am so scared of what results may come back.

Today I could not even focus on work & had to stop after an hour & request leave for the rest of the day.

Is this normal?

Thank you for reaching out to us here at Macmillan Cancer Support.  My name is Rae and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists.  I see that you have joined our Breast Cancer Forum, I hope that you are finding it a useful and supportive environment.

We are sorry to hear that you are struggling emotionally with your first follow up mammogram.  It is normal to feel anxiety whilst waiting for test results.  It is very common to have a range of emotions through your diagnosis, treatment and during recovery.  The important thing is that you have reached out to seek help with this.  Talking to someone about how you feel is very important, this can be your clinical nurse specialist, or our nurses on the support line.  You can also access Someone Like Me at Breast Cancer Now.  We also have free specialist counselling through a partnership with BUPA.  You could also post on the Breast Cancer Forum, or Life After Cancer Forum about how you are feeling, I am sure that you will have some supportive responses from people who have been through the same emotions.

We also have access to Big Health which offers mental health support, which is clinically proven help for insomnia and anxiety.

    Best wishes

    Rae, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
