Is Morphine oral Solution exactly the same as Oramorph?

Hello,

I requested some Oramorph from the Doctors for my Father who has cancer in his Sinus and mouth however, when I collected the prescription from the pharmacist the bottle said Morphine Oral Solution. I'm now afraid to give it to him because he has Pulmonary fibrosis as well and when I read up about Morphine it says not to give it to patients who have lung problems that cause shortness of breath.

The reason I requested the Oramorph was not only for the pain my dad is in from cancer but also because I'd read that Oramorph in small doses can help with breathlessness.

I also think that when my Dad sees the bottle with Morphine written on it he'll refuse to take it. if it said Oramorph he probably wouldn't associate it with Morphine.

I'm now very confused and unsure what to do.

  • Good morning Karenann,

Thank you for getting in touch and welcome to our online community, I hope you find it supportive. My name is Helen and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

It can be confusing when medications have different names to what you were expecting, so I understand your concerns about giving this to him now.

On this platform we’re unable to provide prescription advice. However, I would recommend contacting the GP practice or pharmacist who are the best people to confirm what medication has been prescribed and dispended to him. The GP can also discuss any concerns you have about your Dad taking morphine when he has a lung condition.

I hope this information is helpful but if you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

    Best wishes,

    Helen, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
