  • Thank you for getting in touch with us here in our online community, we see you have already joined our bladder cancer forum, and hope you are finding it a friendly place to visit.

My name is Gemma, and I am one of the cancer information nurses here.

We hope you are recovering well after your first dose of intra- bladder chemotherapy now you are at home.

We have some online, generalised information available for you to read ahead of your next dose.  But it is likely that your hospital team will let you know exactly what to do before discharging you next time.

Common advice is that for the first six hours after each treatment, you should take special precautions when you pass urine. Everyone should sit down to pass urine to avoid splashing, then place the lid down and flush the toilet twice.

You would usually be advised to wash your hands and genital area with soap and water each time you pass urine. If any urine spills onto your skin, wash with soap and water. Taking special care if you have any open wounds that these do not come into contact with the drug or any contaminated urine.

It is helpful to drink plenty of fluids for the rest of the day following the treatment to flush any remaining drug out of your system.

If you are sexually active, the male partner should use a condom during sexual activity for the first forty-eight hours after each treatment.

You should take extra care to prevent children coming into contact with urine contaminated with the drug.

You can read more about chemotherapy and home safety here, and mitomycin treatment in particular here; while these are from an American website, the advice would be the same.
