Tamoxifen & retinal issues

I have been prescribed tamoxifen for breast cancer after a lumpectomy - the doctor did not give me letrozole due to my Dexa scan showing osteopenia although I am 66 yrs old - I have just started tamoxifen but read the side effects and noticed retinal issues - I am worried as I have had 2 retinal tears which resulted in a small detachment  - how common are retinal issues with tamoxifen and are there any other drugs that I could switch to that don’t have this  side effect ?

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I am sorry to hear that you have had previous problems with retinal tears. Have you shared that information with your team? If not give them a call so that they are aware and can assess your situation as they have access to all your medical history and are prescribing the medication.

Eye problems are listed as a common side effect of Tamoxifen with the recommendation that if you get blurry vision or notice any change in your vision, always tell your doctor or nurse. Talk to your team about any concerns that you may have. You can give your breast care nurse or consultant a call today so that you are not worrying

Coping with any side effects of treatment can be challenging. Have a look at our information on coping with treatment or you can give us a call on the Macmillan Support Line to discuss what other support maybe helpful for you right now.

    Best wishes and take care,

    Paula (Cancer Information Nurse Specialist)
