  • Thank you for getting in touch, and a warm welcome to the Online Community. I’m George, one of the Cancer Information Nurses here on the Macmillan Support Line.

As you are aware, there are many side effects from a Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) lung lobectomy procedure. Still, these should start to improve over the weeks and months following such treatment, and recovery following VATS can take time.

The procedure can result in temporary overstimulation of the nerves in the lung and chest area, which can cause symptoms such as a persistent cough for some time post-procedure.

We at Macmillan always recommend getting professional advice from your specialist treatment team or your GP as soon as possible if you develop any new symptoms or have any symptoms that persist or worsen. There can be complications post VATS, such as infection and sometimes blood clots, which can easily be treated with medication if needed.

Dealing with cancer can be emotional, and you might find reading our web pages about getting emotional support helpful. You can also check our webpage to find details of support and information organisations in your area.

I hope the information is helpful. Sometimes talking things through can help, so please don’t hesitate to call the nursing team on 0808 808 0000 – we are here every day from 8am to 8pm.

    Best wishes and take care,

    George
