I was diagnosed with a salivary gland adenocarcinoma last year and had surgery to remove it in September 22. I had my review and scan and they had noticed a shadow area under my scar tissue. Went for another ultrasound and FNA and the ultrasound showed that my lymph nodes were abnormally large but of normal configaration so unclear what that means? and that the tissue under my scar did look abnormal? Im just confused about the whole situation and if something was to come back what would be the likely next steps.

  • Hi MooRooMad

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the Macmillan Online Community. I hope that you find it supportive.

I’m sorry to read that you are feeling confused about your situation.

You said that you had an ultrasound and FNA. You mention that the ultrasound showed that the lymph nodes are abnormally large but of normal configuration. This would mean that structurally the lymph nodes look normal, however they are larger than expected.  The results of the FNA may help with explaining what is going on with your lymph nodes and why they are enlarged.

Waiting for results can be a stressful time. You may find this information on easing worry when waiting for results useful.

If your cancer did come back your consultant would look at the available treatments, based on where the cancer has come back to, and then discuss these options with you.

On the Support Line we do not have access to medical notes or NHS systems and so it is difficult for us to know what is going on and what the next steps would be for you. Your treatment team are best placed to discuss your situation with you and help answer your questions.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.

    Best wishes,
