  • Hi, Shazzy1

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

My name is Eileen, and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists working on the Macmillan support line.

I can appreciate having been diagnosed as having a BRCA2 gene mutation you want to understand the risk of cancer recurring in the breast you had treated 19 years ago. It’s difficult for us to determine your risk as there are many factors involved in breast cancer recurrence.

In addition to having a BRCA mutation the type of breast cancer, stage of cancer when diagnosed, younger age at diagnosis, positive or close surgical margins and lifestyle factors are all considered when assessing someone’s recurrence risk. Generally, the risk of recurrence is thought to be slightly higher in people with a BRCA2 mutation.

We would recommend that you speak to your consultant or Clinical Nurse Specialist at the hospital about your risk. As they have access to your medical information they are best placed to review and assess the possibility of the cancer coming back.

I do hope this information is helpful but please know that you can call one of our nurses to discuss things further.

    Take care and best wishes,

     Eileen
