Hello, I’m 38 and had a double mastectomy for dcis last year which was completely excised and I didn’t require any further treatment. I asked my surgeon who said that when I go through the menopause he recommends that I do not take hrt because of the risk factors associated with it. However I am due to go on holiday and my period is due the same week. Am I able to take the hormone tablets to delay your period as it’s short term only?

  • Hi MamaH,

Thanks for getting in touch.  My name is Amy and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sure you are very much looking forward to your holiday after completing treatment. I appreciate how helpful it would be to delay your period.

We do not have access to NHS medical records, so it is very difficult for me to say whether taking a short course of medication to delay your period would be safe or not. This decision is usually made by someone who knows about your breast cancer, treatment, and risk of recurrence.

I would encourage you to get in touch with your Breast Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or consultant, usually via the secretary to ask for their advice regarding this. You could also discuss this with your GP or local Macmillan pharmacist.

We also have more general information on things to consider before going on holiday and taking care while on holiday you may find useful.

Sorry I am unable to answer your question directly. I hope you have a fabulous time away.

    Best wishes,

Amy C, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
