Hi ,

Two years ago , I found out I had triple negative breast cancer just 6 months after giving birth . I’ve always strongly believed this was linked to the change in my body during pregnancy. There’s also a lot of scientific studies proving my beliefs . My biggest worry is - after having both breast cancer and lung cancer , I find myself pregnant again. I am terrified that this is going to result in the breast cancer returning or a new cancer growing . I have had a double mastectomy but so did my mother who also passed away from breast cancer reoccurring. Please advise

  • Hi Freds

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.

My name is Paula and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Firstly I would like to say, I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mum to breast cancer. I can imagine how difficult this must have been for you. I hope you managed to get bereavement support for your loss.

What a difficult couple years you have had Freds with your own cancer diagnosis 6 months after your pregnancy and now pregnant again. I can imagine how worried you are and the impact it’s having on your feelings.

It’s understandable you have many concerns and it’s natural to worry about a further recurrence whilst pregnant. Although there are some early studies there is insufficient data to show that pregnancies increases your risk of the cancer recurring

It may be worth talking to your health care team about your concerns. They can work alongside your obstetrician who should be involved in your care during and after pregnancy. Both teams are in a ideal position to monitor you closely and discuss your own risk of the cancer coming back.

I can see you have not joined any of our groups on the online forum. You might find it helpful to talk with others who are going through similar experiences. Breast Cancer Now also offer a Someone Like me Service.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions, please get in touch by email, webchat or phone. The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial, and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks* on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.
