  • Hi Mistymoon1,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Jo and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

I can appreciate that you would like some advice about how to link up with a Macmillan nurse for support to manage your husband’s bone pain. This sounds like a difficult time for you both.

There are different types of Macmillan nurses depending on which area of cancer care they work in. It is the Macmillan palliative care nurses who will be able to offer advice and support for your husband and yourself in managing his cancer pain.

A healthcare professional will need to make a referral. This could be either your husband’s cancer doctor, nurse, or his GP. So do speak to them about this, assuming your husband is in agreement.

I wonder whether your husband has spoken to his hospital team about the pain he is experiencing. If not, then it would be a good idea to do so. It is always advisable to let them know about any new or worsening symptoms. They are best placed to offer specific advice and support as they are familiar with your husband’s diagnosis and have access to his medical records.

Here is some further information about managing cancer pain that you might find helpful, including non-drug treatment.

It can be emotionally challenging supporting someone you care about with cancer, so it’s important that you don’t feel alone in dealing with this. There are a number of ways that we here at Macmillan can offer help and support  to both you and your husband so please do get back in touch.

I see that you have already joined some of the forums on our Online Community, and hope you are finding these supportive. There is also information and support available through the charities Prostate Cancer UK and Tackle Prostate Cancer.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch. You can speak with the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or email us.

    Best wishes,
