Toenails lifting again

Hi, I'm new to this group. I had my breast cancer op in late 2021, completed chemo this time last year, then completed radio in June 2022. The hospital were absolutely incredible and I'll never forget how much they helped me through and made me feel in safe hands. During/after chemo my fingernails and toenails all lifted and came off. Apparently, the top tip is to varnish your nails black or very dark before chemo, to protect them from falling off, but I didn't learn that until it was too late really. I have to say, it's not a big deal as they grow back fairly quickly, but today I noticed that my toenails have re-bruised and are lifting off again...almost a year after chemo. Is this normal?

  • Hi Caramia,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is David, one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Firstly, well done you completing your surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Sorry to hear your having an ongoing issue with your nails. Nail changes be temporary problem and sometimes it can last.

It can also be due to bacterial or fungal infection. Therefore, we would err on the side of caution and advise you to make your Breast Care Team aware so they can physically assess and manage from there.

It may also be a good idea to arrange an appointment with a Podiatrist for foot care advice if needed.

In order to Feel More Like You then it may be worth having a look at Look Good Feel Better.

If there is anything else we can help you with please feel free to get back in touch

    Best wishes

    David, Cancer Information Nurse Specialist
