Radiation cystitis

I had brachytherapy last May after endometrial cancer stage 1b. It has become painful with flare ups once a week usually. I am on oxbutynin 3 times a day. I have haematuria but a cystoscopy and scan showed no infection. However oddly Nitrofurantoin seemed to help. Doc reluctant to prescribe it now we know there's no infection but pain wakes me up a lot at night  and is severe.

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the Macmillan online community. I see from your profile that you’ve joined the womb cancer forum. I hope you find it supportive.

I’m sorry to read that you are having issues with the effects of the brachytherapy you had last May. As you are experiencing, pelvic radiotherapy is hard going and can cause a lot of side effects.  On average, these side effects settle within 6 weeks of treatment, but for some people they can last a lot longer or come on months or years down the line.

Keep talking to your treatment team to get support with the pain you are experiencing.

Our information about  managing the late effects of pelvic radiotherapy can be helpful to read. We have more information about treating bowel problems and managing bowel symptoms

Side effects of cancer treatment can affect how you feel psychologically as well as physically.  We offer free specialist counselling to people with a cancer diagnosis. This may help with finding coping mechanisms to manage the distress these side effects can cause.

You might find it helpful to talk to others going through a similar situation. There is support available through our online community and, via our online search tool.

You might find the Helpline at the Pelvic Radiation Disease Association worth a call. They are very much involved in post-treatment issues. You can find them at https://www.prda.org.uk/ or on 01372 744338.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.
