Help with acromegaly symptoms

Hi - thanks so much in advance - I’m waiting to speak with my endocrinologist but hoping for some advice whilst I wait.

I’ve had acromegaly for nearly 20 years, had 2x surgery and have been on Pegvisamont ever since. I’m probably going to have more surgery in the next few months as the tumour is still active/growing so they’re hoping to be curative this time.

I’ve only just (mad given I’ve had this for years and sort of thought I knew it all!) realised that a core symptom of acromegaly is gastro issues and I’ve been struggling massively with these for years. I’ve been taking lansprazole for years due to constant heartburn and am also on a drug to assist with over active bladder. I didn’t know however that constipation was also a symptom and this is what I’m really struggling with! I don’t drink much water (because it causes bladder issues) but then this must exacerbate the constipation? All constipation medication says it’s dangerous to take long term - but I really need something to help as it’s causing me really bad mental health issues. I’m terrified to go to the loo in my house as every time I do it blocks the toilet and I’m so embarrassed about it.

Could you advise/suggest anything I can do to help relieve the constipation? I’ve tried diet, exercise etc etc but all these are so much harder with acromegaly that it feels like a losing battle! If I drink more water then I’m constantly terrified of making it to the loo in time but then I’m equally terrified of going to the loo and blocking it!!

Thank you!

  • Hi Acromegaly Patient,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

It’s good to hear that you are waiting to speak to your endocrinologist, and that they’re hoping further surgery will be curative,

However, it’s not so good to hear about the problems you’ve been having.

Acromegaly is rare, and can cause a wide range of symptoms, however we’d recommend speaking to your GP about the problems you’ve been having with constipation and about the really bad mental health issues its causing.

They are best placed to assess you and advise on the management of your constipation and to help improve your mental health.

If you’re not able to speak to your GP, you should call 111, or you could get in touch with your hospital team who might be able to arrange for you to see the endocrinologist sooner.

I’m not sure from your post if you are a member of the online group. ‘Acromegaly support’. Their Acromegaly Community is a place to connect with others who might be sharing similar experiences.

And the NHS website, ‘Every Mind Matters’ has lots of information and tips which might be helpful too.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Sending best wishes,

    Carole
