AFP markers rise

Hi,

At what rise in AFP levels should I become concerned that I've had a recurrence of a non-seminoma tumour? It was a stage 1 tumour so I only had an orchiectomy with surveillance plan last year. I've recently been asked to repeat my tumour markers - the doc mentioned there was a rise but didn't say how much and I'm still waiting to hear back about the 2nd blood test results.

Thanks.

  • Hi Miha,

Welcome to our online community and thank you for your question. My name is Joanne and I’m one of the cancer information nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear that you are concerned about a rise in your AFP level. It is difficult to say at what point you should be concerned but your doctors seem to be proactive in repeating your blood test, which is reassuring. It is also reassuring that you had a stage 1 tumour.

I wonder if you have a specialist nurse at your hospital that you could contact. They would be able to talk you through your blood results in detail and what that means for you individually.

At Macmillan we as part of our online community we have a testicular cancer forum which you may find supportive. In addition to this you may wish to contact us directly on our support line 0808 808 0000, open 8-8 7 days a week.

    Best wishes
