Pleural effusion

Hi

is it possible to have a pleural effusion that is non-malignant? My mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer but they are testing the pleural fluid plus either a biopsy of the rib or an EBUS. I have read that if it’s confirmed cancer in the fluid then it will be stage 4 lung cancer?

Thank you

  • Hi Lujo,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan with your question. I can see that you have joined our lung cancer and friends and family forum. I hope you are finding these helpful. My name is Joanne and I’m one of the cancer information nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

I’m sorry to hear that your mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer, this must be a very worrying time for you and your family.

It is possible for the plural effusion to be caused by infection or some heart conditions but it is also a common symptom of cancer. By removing some of the fluid that has built up this may make your mum feel less breathless and more comfortable. Her doctors can also test this fluid for cancer cells which will help then to decide what treatment to offer her.

You mention that the doctors are also considering an EBUS or rib biopsy. This is to gain as much information as they can from the tissue samples they collect. Your mum may also have scans as part of the tests to diagnose her cancer.

Once your mum’s doctors have all the information, they need they will tell her what they know and what treatment is available. They will also be able to tell you what stage the lung cancer is.

I hope this information is helpful and that the links give you addition information. if you would like to speak to someone please feel free to give us a call on 0808 808 0000.

    Best wishes
