BenignThyroid Nodule

Whilst having a CT Scan to see if my tongue cancer had spread to my lymph nodes it was  highlighted that I have a benign thyroid nodule.  I need to have an ultrasound carried out.

Why would I need an ultrasound when the scan has already detected the problem?

Am I correct in assuming that a cancerous tumour would show up differently on a ct scan as opposed to a benign nodule?

  • Hi Mick,

Thank you or reaching out to us. My name is Anne and I am one of the cancer information nurses from the Macmillan Support Line. I see you have already joined our head and neck cancer forum. I hope you have found it supportive so far.

I understand you have some questions around the incidental finding of a benign thyroid nodule during a recent CT scan. In situation like this, patients often go on to have an ultrasound as this allows a much more detailed assessment of the nodule. Should the nodule appear suspicious during the ultrasound, then the team may wish to take a small tissue sample called a fine needle aspiration. It is worth remembering that most thyroid nodules are benign.

Have you spoken to your Clinical Nurse Specialist? They are well placed to discuss your concerns. If you are unsure who your CNS is, you can call your Consultant’s secretary and ask them for their contact details. They have access to your NHS records and can be a huge source of support.

    Take care for now,
