Dealing With Come-down After FOLFOX Steroids

Hello!

I’d like to know if anyone has discovered a way to ameliorate the come-down that I experience about three days after FOLFOX  infusion.

The steroids that accompany infusion do a decent job of keeping me feeling energized. But when they wear off, I feel like I hit a wall. The fatigue lasts for three or four days.

I have taken the oral methylprednisolone as directed and it doesn’t seem to help much.

Any suggestions for dosage routine for the methylprednisolone or some other treatment that has worked for others

Thanks in advance.

Pete

  • Hello Pete,

Thanks for getting in touch. My name is Denisza, I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

Thank you for getting in touch on our Online Community, I’ve noticed you have also joined another forum group and hope you are finding it supportive and helpful.

I am sorry to read you are experiencing fatigue after your FOLFOX treatment and that the methylprednisolone does not seem to have the desired effect. Fatigue is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy and it can affect people to different extent. Unfortunately, we are unable to advise you on medication regimes on this platform as we do not have access to your medical notes (NHS notes) therefore we would advise you to speak to your treating team about possible changes to your medication. Some people find steroids very effective, but steroids also have side effects therefore your treating team is in the best position to weigh up the risks and benefits. You may find it helpful to read about fatigue and ways to manage it here. The Your Health Matters site features a video, which also discusses the causes and ways to manage cancer related fatigue which you may find helpful.

I hope this information is useful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in contact by email, webchat or phone, if you need further information or support.
