Hi, I take care of my grandkids while my kids go to work, my husband is starting radical radiotherapy and chemotherapy soon, we have an appointment with oncology to discuss this on Monday, my question is - Is it safe for my grandkids to be around their granddad while having these treatments? What are the safety guidelines regarding this please?

  • Hi Juerio

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community. I see that you’re a member of our lung cancer forum and cancer chat forum. I hope you are finding them supportive.

I understand you have some concerns over whether there are any risks for your grandkids to be near their granddad whilst he is having chemotherapy & radiotherapy.

After each chemotherapy session, the drugs can remain in the body for up to a week. During this time, very small amounts of the drugs may be released from the body, either in vomit, urine, faeces (poo), blood, saliva, sweat, semen or vaginal discharge, and breastmilk.

You may worry about the safety of family and friends while your husband is having chemotherapy. There is little risk to visitors, including children, babies and pregnant women, because they aren’t likely to come into contact with any chemotherapy drugs or body fluids.

These safety measures are recommended for people who are providing care or have other close contact with the person having treatment during their recovery period at home. Following these safety measures will help to reduce exposure to chemotherapy drugs at home. Safety precautions can vary depending on the drugs you receive, so ask his treatment team about his individual situation.

External radiotherapy doesn't make you radioactive. It is safe to be with other people after each treatment, including children.

I hope this information helps. Please feel free to get back in touch if you want more information or support.
