Hello,

I am constantly looking at ways to help this condition, invasive ductal carcinoma. I am still taking a Collagen supplement, I have had surgery but yet to meet the Oncologist. Awaiting Oncotype DX result. Does collagen supplementation increase cancer growth. Ie should I stop? I am slowly stopping everything apart from prescribed medication.

Thank you for your help and advice.

  • Hi Sabrina,

Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support regards Collagen supplements. Hope you are recovering well from your recent surgery for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.

There is not a lot of scientific evidence regards supplements and cancer. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you discuss any supplements you are using with your Consultant and Cancer Pharmacist.

That way they can make sure that there will be no drug interactions with anything they might prescribe for you.

Collagen appears to have both anti and pro-tumour effects and research is ongoing in this field.

Its also a good idea to be wary of miss-information on the internet as this can take you down the wrong path. CRUK helps explain some of the cancer myths out there currently.

People sometimes find it helps to talk to people who may be in a similar situation. Our Breast Cancer Forum might be a good place to start. Breast Cancer Now is also a good source of information and support.

    With best wishes

  • Thank you David. I'm not overly worried just trying to be careful until I know. I'll ask when I meet the Oncology Team. I'm still waiting for the Oncotype DX result. 13 days and counting. I try to read but not too much, I was a Nurse and just like to slowly build knowledge without scaring myself.
