Low alkaline phosphatase level

Hi I don't know if you can as answer this, my pre op blood screen showed my Alkaline Phosphatase to be low. It is 22 and the range is 35 to 110. Apparently it was the same last year. I don't yet know if I'll have chemo or just radiotherapy. The surgeon who did the breast op said not to worry. Well this is the time to worry, would it get in the way of treatment do you think?

Many thanks

Christine

  • Hi Sabrina22

Thanks for your post. My name is Lindsey and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line

I appreciate your concern over your low alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level. There are many reasons why your level may be low including deficiency in some vitamins and minerals like zinc and magnesium.

As you mentioned, usually the range of ALP is given as between 35 and 110 IU/L. Recent research has suggested that the range of normal ALP levels is broader at 20 to 140 IU/L.

As a next step you could make an appointment to talk this through with your GP. They would be able to determine if any other tests are indicated.

It’s good to hear the surgeon was not concerned. You will get a chance to speak to the Oncologist before you start your radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, in the meantime you could also talk to your breast care nurse about your concern.

I hope this information is helpful. Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch if there is anything else that we can help you with. We are available 7 days a week 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000. Or you can send an email.

    Kind regards,

    Lindsey

  • Thank you Lindsey, that is reassuring. I don't think I am malnourished. I just didn't want it to get in the way of any treatment I might need.
